Do you have the problem?

The usual symptom is an inability to effectively control the temperature in your car. Note that this symptom can also be caused by a bad temp control knob, and this is a common failure on Ford trucks. Please check carefully before considering the blend door fix.

The problems with the Cherokee and Wrangler are different than our other kits. First, be sure your Jeep has electronic control and isn’t the “old fashioned” cable link to a slide lever. If there is a little actuator motor on the bottom of the box next to the transmission tunnel, our kit is correct.

The door on these models is a flexible plastic instead of the usual hard plastic with foam sealing. The door has a tiny stop nub inside the box that breaks quickly and the door can move past the stop point and even wedge in the air flow opening. You’re usually OK until the flexible door “wears out” and bends when the motor forces it to the correct stop point. Once the door gets too much flexibility from the constant bending, it twists the axle too far when the computer attempts to calibrate the system and the HVAC controls get “confused” and won’t move the door correctly between hot and cold. The problem isn’t that the door physically breaks like other models, but that it becomes too flexible over time and the computer is expecting a hard stop which doesn’t occur. The fail symptom can be a lack of control over temperature is the door is stuck or just very flakey behavior from a computer that doesn’t “know” whether the door is fully open or closed.

If you remove the actuator motor and turn the blend door axle you can manually switch between heat and AC, but once the door begins to move too far from a broken stop point and an overly flexible door, the computer can’t properly modulate the door.

Our kit replaces the plastic door with steel that won’t flex and will properly stop on the frame of the door openings. This allows the computer control system to properly calibrate and operate correctly again. It’s a fairly simple repair to a very annoying problem.



The Heater Treater Kit does the following:

  • •Replaces the plastic blend doors and axle with steel components.
  • •All work is done through the glove box opening and no disassembly of the dash or evacuation of the AC system is required.
  • •Tools required are a screw driver, pair of pliers, and a Dremel tool (purchased at any Target or hardware store).
  • •Includes detailed instructions and all hardware required to complete the fix, including dremel bits and metal tape to seal the cut.
  • •The repair will take about an 90 minutes the first time, and once you have experience, about 45 minutes.
  • No extensive mechanical skills are required.
  • •The instructions are dual-level, for mechanics and a “Instructions for Dummies” version.
  • •The fix is really easy and MUCH preferable to disassembly of the entire dash and engine cooling systems.
